Can your college financial aid take over apartment rent during school?

My boyfriend is moving into my apartment this month and will be put on the lease as responsible for 1/2 the monthly rent. He is planning on starting college in June, at which point he won’t be able to pay the $350 a month. Is it possible for his school to work his rent into his school loans? If it matters, he is going to be attending Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

  1. It depends on the school’s cost of attendance and how much they offer for living expenses. Plus, if he’ll need the full amount of the stafford loan for tuition, then he would have to take out private loans to cover his living expenses (not a good idea). The maximum stafford loans a dependent freshman can take is $5,500/year (disbursed twice a year for semesters or three times a year for quarters). He would need almost the entire loan just to cover rent. Couldn’t he continue to work part-time to cover the $350/month in rent?
